Welcome to the Clown Show!

So we were roofing today (finally!! the rain has been keeping us indoors)... anyway.. we were on a roof when all of a sudden, I look over and see people on my level.  The neighbor had called back his roofers to fix a leak.  I could see that it was a new roof (the houses were really close).  They had no idea where the leak was coming from.  One of them explained to me, "It's like a leak coming from a nail or something".  Really, clown!? How about the fact that you didn't check your step flashing around the chimney or even bother to put a starter underneath the first shingle over the back pan (starters are upside down shingles that make up for the keyhole of the properly oriented shingle)! This is all that was very obvious to me from a second's glance.  I never got on the neighbour's roof, but I'm sure there was a handful of other problems.  How do I know?  Because when someone who is unqualified to even stand on a roof can't find any sort of solution, they tar the shit out of everything.  Pardon my language but they really, really tarred the shit out of it.  It was dripping with black all over the chimney flashing and all over that first shingle that was missing its starter.  I've only seen something like it on a very old roof that needed to be replaced years before.  Ya.  I'm sure that homeowner got his money's worth.

More Metal Valley Issues

To the left is a photo of one problem we've encountered with the metal valley. We've seen it many times. It's why we no longer install it.  There are still companies that promote this outdated style of valley.  These are probably the same companies that would have spoken ill of the fibreglass shingle when it first appeared in the industry.  We are now observing the trend moving in favor of fibreglass, and organics are becoming obsolete.

Here is another issue: the buckling of the metal (left photo), especially if the seam of the valley is not a perfectly straight line. The closed valley is much more attractive. And the most important point...

Above is the before shot. Water rushes down the steeper slope at a fast rate and crashes down, under the shingles of the lower sloped side.  Above, right: Removal of the shingles on the low pitch reveals the water that was sitting below.  Lower, right: Low slope shingles wrap up under the shingles of the steep roof. The steep roof is shingled last and cut. When water comes down now, it cannot get under the shingles. This valley is located above a newborn's bedroom. Luckily, it was found and repaired before mold formation.

Owner, President of Durham Region Roofing Ltd.  I, myself, have been roofing since 2006.  I learned everything from my partner, who has been in the industry for over twenty years.  Although my partner is the main decision maker in the field, I have made sure that I maintain extensive knowledge of the roofing industry because I realize that, as a woman, I must prove myself to be as good or better than my male counterparts and because as an owner, it is my business to know my field.  My major contribution is my commitment to excellent customer service and ethical business practices, although my partner shares this view with me as well.
